Skills for Supervising a Holiday Playscheme

Incorporating the Playwork Induction Standard Level 3

In Summer 2005 the research department for SkillsActive, the Playwork Sector Skills Council, undertook and published a survey of holiday play settings, to identify the skills gaps and shortages presenting barriers to employers wishing to run play settings. While 45.9% of employers reported difficulty meeting quality standards as a result of skills gaps, 67% reported the provision of further training as the way to resolve the difficulty.

As a result of this demand, SkillsActive convened a working group to explore the design of an induction standard at level 3, to build on the level 2 induction standard which has been accepted by Ofsted.

In 2007 Crechendo Training, in consultation with Christine Andrews of Play Factors, wrote a course based on the new standard. The course was piloted in the summer of 2007 - and with reflection and evaluation, is now ready to run this summer.

Crechendo Training is one of the first training providers to receive approval through the endorsement process with SkillsActive to deliver this course.

Aim of the Course

  • To identify the skills required to manage a good quality summer playscheme.

  • To support the supervisors in using the management skills.

Content Includes:

The Values and Playwork Principles

Facilitating Play

Role of the Playwork Supervisor

Safeguarding Children's Wellbeing

Communicating with Children, Young People and Adults

Understanding Child Development (4 - 16)

Programme Schedule:

Crechendo Training is able to be flexible as to how the programme can be run. The course is based on 21 hours of class time with an expectation of students to complete 10 hours individual study and 19 hours of summer holiday work.

Student Entry Requirements:

Students will be expected to have completed a level 2 playwork introductory course or have a level 2 playwork qualification. They should have a minimum of 50 hours playwork practice in the last 3 years and will be working as a Supervisor on the summer scheme for a minimum of 19 hours. Students must be at least 18 years of age, and have a current CRB. As a pre-course requirement we ask they spend a minimum of 5 hours reading from the recommended reading list and complete a pre course task.

The requirement from the level 3 standard is that "Daycare providers have a responsibility for ensuring that all learners have successfully completed training in: Child Protection/safeguarding children, manual handling and first aid."

Method of Delivery:

The style will be informal, interactive, and each participant will receive folders, pens and relevant handouts to support their learning. Care is taken to ensure all students needs are met.
